My Journey at esense

15 12 2006

This story does not start 2 years ago; it started around 8 months before that, on one of those loooong frustrating days of working on my graduation project; started with a strange number blinking on my mobile screen, and a stranger on the other side asking when I would be available to arrange an interview at some software company called esense.

Ruba –as I learned later was the secretary’s name that called me- couldn’t have picked a worst timing for this phone call… things were going bananas with our project, I had just hit a new record of sleepless, stressful nights, and then more than ever was sure that I HATED programming.

At that moment, it took me 3 seconds to decide it is too early for me to even think about work, I explained that I’m done with school yet and I will be contacting them again when I do.

Two days later, I turned down an internship opportunity with Microsoft (shu ya3ni MS a7san min esense, biddesh)

Oh well, passed my project, got my bachelor’s degree, graduation, prom, after parties followed by 6 months of doing nothing but having fun! Till, one day I took a break and stopped to think of the FUTURE, a word I hate now as much as I hated back then… oh dear, time to look for a JOB :s

Chatting with Dalia- a friend from uni, she told me she worked at an amazing company (yes, esense again) and they’re hiring, and thought I should apply… and so I did, lost as ever, still filled with revulsion feeling towards the software business, but in need to feel some self worthiness, I applied, passed their exams, got an interview appointment and well… didn’t show up!

Around a month later, rather desperate to find a job, I called Dalia again, asked her to arrange for another interview…

She did, and I showed up this time, met with the GM for an hour and a half, left his office bewildered by his brilliance, and believing I will not see that place again. A week later, I had another interview, and another one after that, and then it came *Kabamaro face on*… the job offer.

December 15, 2004, exactly 2 years ago, I started my career with esense, a small company, with around 15 employee, and 4 running projects… Today, esense is one of leading software companies in the region, with over 75 innovative and diverse IT professionals.

I love the place; I love the people behind it and in it… Thank you for an amazing 2-year journey… and many to go.

Finally, I will leave you with a motto inspired by Amal on esense:

“We may not be the world’s number one astonishing breath-taking, excellent service provider, but we are definitely one astonishing, breath-taking, excellent service provider, and we continue to be…”

Euro Trip- Day Zero

14 10 2006

So I sat down on my laptop planning to get some work done, something I’ve been postponing for the last 3 days… Music’s on, coffee ready, pack of Marlboro next to me… I have everything set except for my brain waves… so what do I do instead?I go through some of the pictures we took during our last trip to Europe… I then decided to write this belated post…Couldn’t sleep the night before our flight, I kept going over things in my mind: “Did I pack my brush? What about my pink pull, just in case it gets cold at night…? Rawan, for God’s sake, u checked the weather forecast like 20 times already, it is NOT cold, u packed everything u needed and we’ve been through this list a million times already… get some sleep, u have a long day ahead of you”.I had a real bad feeling about this trip, I wasn’t all that excited, and whoever knows me knows I can get extremely excited about going to 7aboub (a market place next to my office)! Yet here I was, on a 9-day vacation to Europe, and not excited! For some reason, I was scared… and I couldn’t explain it! It had nothing to do with the Pope’s speech of Islam, and the fact that visiting the Vatican was on our schedule… nor the Qa3ida’s threats to bomb Paris 2 days before we leave! After all the debating and change of plans, from Germany to Amsterdam to Paris, we finally settled on going to the 2 cities in Europe under threat… Sweeeeeet!Anyways, the day came, went to the airport, and there you go first disappointment I had was in the duty free center, I couldn’t find my Dunhills, ok fine, I’m not going to fret over this…”Passengers of flight # mish 3arfeh shu to Rome are requested to head to gate 10 for boarding”… it’s about time… Damn it, I can see a couple of infants waiting with their parents… ma 3aleina… aha, at last things are getting better, a cute Italian guy walked in the waiting area… “Amal, check this guy out” …”Passengers of flight # mish 3arfeh shu to Rome are kindly requested to head to Gate 12″… 12?!!! What, why, fiiiine, twelve twelve …elmuhem netla3… “We’re sorry, please move back to Gate 10″… what the @!#!@$!@%$!@%!Mashi, we finally boarded, and let me tell u something; RJ still sucks, 2al screen lekol mwaten 2al… Bull!! The service sucks, the food sucks and Holy shit! They call this an EXIT seat! My feet are going to bloat like a balloon by the time we get to Rome! Perfect, just perfect…Featured film … March of the Penguins :SMa 3aleina betoul hal sulafeh… wela agulko… tawalat kteer wallah…To be continued…Stay tuned to learn about the Bronx moving to Rome, our lovely 2 star hotel room, how I almost caught Pneumonia, and Amal and Rami’s close encounter with food poisoning … till then i leave you with these pictures :)    Desperate attempt to learn Italian 10 minutes before boarding!

First of many… the cute Italian at the airport

Rami, Amal and myself…

Exit seat space… Oh my poor Ankles :’(

Aseeleh ya Asala

6 10 2006

Fridays are about TV… intensive TV viewing…

It is also about catching up with all the stupid (rather entertaining) Arabic video clips…

No no , don’t worry, I will not start another debate about these so called artists morality race to the bottom … because whether you admit it or not, you all enjoy it!

This time I noticed something different… unusual, and from a rather ‘respectful’ artist!

If you saw Asala’s new song, then you know what I’m talking about… ‘Khaleeha 3ala allah” is her new song, where she’s shown as a house wife, and a mother of four!!!

So here’s the funny part; in an attempt to capture a day in an Islamic family’s life during Ramadan… here’s what this clip has:

1. Asala is shown cooking Iftar for her family, while the director chooses to focus on the brand name “Universal” of the stove, the microwave, and the filter, repeatedly! A new marketing policy for the company?! Well… STUUUUPPPIIIID!

2. The kids come back from school, and first thing they do is run to hug their loving mother! One actually stumbles over the coach to reach her, the other leaves the door open to catch up with her siblings! Now give me a break!

3. Ftour time, family gathered around the table, you’d think they’ll be fighting over food, but noooo, what are they doing? Family have their hands up, Asala is reciting a prayer (rather long one)… now I don’t know how what goes on in your house, but in mine, we’d be extra faithful if we remembered to say the iftar du3a2! Silently! And as fast as we can!
The funny part here is that every line Asala recites begins with a pure Syrian word “B7a2″, followed by a phrase in ‘fus7a’, with an Egyptian word every now and then!

So here you go, she managed to combine Islamic values, parenthood guides, advertising, and Arab-cultural union all in one song!

Can you say M-A-S-K-H-A-R-A?!
